Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty
Authors: Joy Masoff.
Paperback, 224 pages
Publisher: Workman Publishing Company
Publication Date: 2000-01-02

Reviews :

Kids love stuff that's gross. From the liquids, solids, and gases--especially the gases!--or their own bodies to the creepy, crawly, slimy, slithery, fetid, and feculent phenomena in the world at large, kids with a curious bent just can't get enough. Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty brings together, in one book, all the good things about some of the baddest things on Earth.

Exhaustively researched and impeccably scientific, yet written with a lively lack of earnestness, Oh, Yuck! is an ants to zits encyclopedic compendium covering people, animals, insects, plants, foods, and more. Here are vampire bats, which sip blood and pee at the same time so that they'll always be light enough to fly away; and slime eels, wreathed in mucus and eating fellow fish from the inside out. Oh, Yuck! explains why vomit smells; where dandruff comes from; what pus is all about; and why maggots adore rotting meant. Other features include gross recipes, putrid projects, 10 foods that make you airborne, and more.

With hundreds of cartoon illustrations and real-life photographs, Oh, Yuck! is the complete guide to the irresistible--at least to an 8-to-12 year old--underbelly of life....

Authors: Garen Thomas.

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Publication Date: 2008-06-24

Reviews :

In third grade, Barack Obama wrote an essay titled, “I Want to Become President”—and he is, to this day, determined to show the world that, yes, he can.

Born in the U.S.A., the son of an African father and an American mother, a boy who spent his childhood in Indonesia and Hawaii, Barack Obama is truly a citizen of the world. His campaign for the presidency is powered by a fierce optimism, an exuberant sense of purpose and determination, and, above all, a belief that change can happen.

Garen Thomas takes us through the life of Barack Obama, from his struggle to fit in with his classmates and concern about not knowing his biological father, through his term as Illinois senator, to his historic and momentum-building run for president of the United States.

Barack Obama is a man who uses his words to inspire us. We can have a better future. We can be whatever we want to be. Yes. We. Can.

Good Night, Gorilla
Authors: Peggy Rathmann.
Board book, 34 pages
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publication Date: 1996-02-21
Edition: Brdbk

Reviews :

A zookeeper finds his normal nighttime routine upset when a mischievous little gorilla steals his keys and lets all his animal charges out of their cages, in a board book edition of the popular picture book....

"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by the gorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light. Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. Publisher: DK CHILDREN

Reviews :

This is a fully updated edition of the extremely popular Children's Dictionary. Now with more than 35,000 entries, this edition has updated definitions, images, and details; plus 2,000 additional words and 900 additional images....

In evaluating a children's dictionary, there are two test words we always check first: "e-mail" and "iguana." After all, if "e-mail" doesn't appear in a dictionary, how up-to-date can it be? And iguanas, well, what kid doesn't want to read all about this "very large tropical American lizard with a ridge of tall scales along its back"? We are happy to report that this fine dictionary is above and beyond our gold standard. Not only are there definitions for each of the test words, there are illustrations for each, as well! This 912-page illustrated dictionary is packed with great information, including world maps on the inside covers, an easy-to-use how-to guide, and a reference section with facts and maps of the continents, pictures of flags from countries around the world, U.S. presidents and vice presidents, pronunciation guides, signs and symbols, and lots more. Sandwiched between this wealth of facts and figures are 846 pages of definitions with DK's trademark crisp, clear photographs illustrating many of the words. One of the handiest features in this volume is the multicolored alphabet running down the outer edges of every single page, with the featured letter highlighted for easy reference when flipping through. So get out there and e-mail all your iguana friends about this terrific reference guide! (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter...
